What is Protein?
Proteins are essential nutrients for the human body, which are consist of long chains of amino acids. Protein is essential for building muscles and tissues.
They help in metabolism by providing structural support and by acting as enzymes, carriers, or hormones. The building blocks of proteins (monomers) are amino acids.
According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), protein is composed of amino acids, which are organic compounds made of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen or sulfur. Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins, and proteins are the building blocks of muscle mass. Now the question arises, what is protein powder or how is it made?
Protein powder is the concentrated sources of protein extracted from various sources (like animal based or plant based foods) such as milk, eggs, soy, etc
These are extracted based on these three forms:
Protein concentrates: has a very high protein content and is extracted or prepared from vegetable or animal matter. The most common of such substances are leaf protein concentrate(LPC) and fish protein concentrate(FPC). These contain around 60 – 70% of protein and remaining are fats and carbs.
Protein isolates: created by separating fats and carbs from Whey protein. Whey is a milk by-product of the cheese-making process. This contains around 90 to 95% of protein.
Protein Hydrolysate: Protein hydrolysates are produced from purified protein sources by heating with acid or, preferably, the addition of proteolytic enzymes, followed by purification procedures. These have special application in sports because its consumption allows amino acids to be absorbed by the body more rapidly, thus maximizing nutrient delivery to muscle tissues.
Is Whey Protein necessary to build muscles?
The first thing you need to understand is why these are called supplements (like protein supplements or bodybuilding supplements).
If you search on google the meaning of Supplements, it says that supplements mean “a thing added to something else to complete or enhance it.“
In other words, the idea of supplements is to deliver nutrients that may not be consumed in sufficient quantity, you don’t need supplements if your diet has sufficient amount of nutrients, so it is not necessary to take supplements like whey protein.
However, if you want to add supplements, that’s fine as well as long as you are taking a proper diet.
Do not consider taking whey protein or any other supplements when you are not taking a proper diet and only relying on these supplements, this will not help you change your body, Trust me, whole foods are the best thing you can eat to change your body, supplements will just enhance their workings.
