What are Omega 3 Fatty Acids?

Omega 3 Fatty Acids are essential or you can say vital fats you should include in your diet in order to fulfill the need of your body to function properly as well as many other health benefits we will talk about in this post.

What does Omega 3 fatty acids do: Omega 3 fatty acid

Omega 3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), they are widely distributed in nature.

They play an important in the human diet and in human physiology.

There are three types of omega-3 fatty acids involved in human physiology:

  1. α-linolenic acid (ALA), found in plant oils.
  2.  eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), found in marine oils.
  3. docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), also found in marine oils.

Omega 3 Helps Lower Blood Pressure

Omega 3 fatty acids helps lowering blood pressure by activating some chemical reactions.

 

Heart health

 Omega 3 may help you cure problems related to heart health, these are unsaturated fats that may reduce inflammation throughout the body. Many studies suggest that they might have minimal effect on cardiovascular benefits.

 

Omega 3 Helps fight Inflammation

As it was mentioned in earlier points that Omega 3 can fight Inflammation.

Inflammation is part of biological response of our body against infections or harmful stimuli and is a protective response to such dangers, hence it is important for your health.

But, a long term inflammation, also known as Chronic Inflammation, may last for a longer time in your body, which can cause damage to several tissues, cells and many more.

Omega 3 can reduce the production of substances released due to inflammatory response of our body.

Omega 3 is known to improve stiffness, swelling and many other problems related to joint health.

Omega 3 is also known to increase blood flow in body during workout/exercise, which can reduce joint pain and swelling.

It’s one of the reasons gym goers or advanced athletes suggest omega 3 supplements to others.

Sources of Omega 3 Fatty Acid

Common sources of ALA: 

  • Seeds.
  • Flaxseed oils.
  • Walnut.
  • Echium oil.
  • Algal oil.

Common sources of EPA and DHA:

  • Fishes like salmon, mackerel, tuna, herring.
  • Fish oils.
  • Squid oils.

These are some common and natural sources of Omega 3 fatty acids.

These were some common and natural sources of three types of Omega 3, but if you are Vegetarian or you don’t eat fish it would be hard to get these Omega 3 fatty acids.

However there are some supplements present in the market (such as tablets of omega 3) which might be helpful for you,

I still suggest you to eat natural sources of Omega 3, but if you can’t do it, then you might consider taking supplements of Omega 3 from some known brands, like Healthkart, WOW, Nutrafirst, etc, these are some known brands in India.
